How Six Cylinder Engine Works

A 6-cylinder engine means that all the cylinders are arranged in a method called Inline engine. This means that is side by side. This is one of the most compact motor engines in the market. The individual cylinders are 5 inches bore and stroke.

Improvements have been done in this engine to do away with the noise that comes from the little vibrations. To drive the two camshafts, large, wide-faced, spiral gears are used. The camshafts are placed in Hess-Bright ball bearings of generous size. The cams are large as well as the nickel-steel valves which makes the engine noiseless.

In the valves, there are two washers, smaller and larger washers. The large washer is on the exhaust valve while the smaller washer is on the inlet valve. The valves are operated by independent rocker arms. The rods operating these rockers fit into adjustable ball-and-socket joints.

60 percent of all the gases burnt are discharged through the auxiliary exhaust valves. This valve doesn’t tend to warp the ordinary air-cooled motor exhaust valve. The valve in this instance is a mere shell.

Build and Functions of 6-Cylinder Engine

The interior surface of these cylinders is the smallest possible giving account of the rounding heads. These make the charges of gas use the greatest number of heat units making the new engine more economical than the old engine.

The cylinders are oil through the splash lubrication method. A high level of oil is maintained by gear-drive mechanical oiler means. At the end of each cylinder, baffle plates are fitted causing oil to be drawn up through an opening the thrust side of the piston. From this point, the oil gradually works itself through to the other side.

The 6-cylinders are provided with two spark plugs. One of the plugs is fed from the magneto while the other one is supplied by a battery from a single coil and distributor. The pistons and the material used in the engine cylinders are extra strong, fine-grained cast iron. This ensures that the engine lacks vibrations, runs quietly and ensures its long life.

The smooth running features of a 6-cylinder engine make it more desirable for industrial usage. A factor that has been reducing the six-cylinder engine from achieving its highest speed has been the simple geometric reality with relatively long-stroke design. A straight-six has a long engine that the manufacturer has been requested to make it shorter.

Using a longer stroke has become a tendency to achieve given capacity. A long-stroke engine tends to be too wide that encourages the use of the bore rather than the stroke to increase the displacement. This also increases the crank throw and speed of the piston reducing the rpm rate of the engine.

6-Cylinder Engine is Simpler than that of V6 and V8 Engines

6-cylinder engines have their components and accessories located along both sides instead of the top or under the cylinders. Therefore, maintenance of the six-cylinder engines is much easier than in the V engine which is in tracks and has industrial configurations. Mechanically, six-cylinder engines are simpler than the V6 and V8 engines. They only have one cylinder head and half as many camshafts.
